Have you been wondering what the mindfulness buzz is all about? A growing body of research shows that mindfulness and yoga can have positive effects on a child’s mental health by improving coping and resilience, lowering stress, and increasing focus and concentration skills. Recently Mindful Roots of Fort Wayne, Indiana had the opportunity to work with students at Forest Park Elementary by teaching them ways to do yoga with limited space, such as in a classroom, and mindfulness techniques to improve focus/concentration and calming skills for when a child feels frustrated, angry, hurt, bored, upset, etc. Mindfulness can help a child learn to pause and choose how to respond to a stressful situation instead of mindlessly reacting.
Without mindfulness skills:
STRESSOR — UNSKILLED REACTION (ex. Yelling, hitting, tantrum, etc.)
With mindfulness skills:
STRESSOR —PAUSE —SKILLED RESPONSE (ex. Using “I feel” statements, walking away, etc.)
In addition to classroom yoga (think chair yoga!!), Mindful Roots is available to teach the Mindful Schools curriculum in classrooms/organizations/wellness centers in the Fort Wayne area. Included in the curriculum are skills such as mindful listening, mindful breathing, body awareness, recognizing emotions, gratitude, generosity, kindness, and much more!!

Ongoing kid’s yoga as well as 8-week mindfulness workshop series are available and we would love to hear your ideas as well! Our goal is to provide the children in our community with strong “roots” to be able to handle whatever life throws at them to create a stronger, healthier, more peaceful community.
